20世纪以来，语言任意论在语言学界始终占据着不可动摇的主导地位。然而，语言并非是绝对任意的，它存在着明显的象似性特征。语言的象似性是指语言符号在音、形或结构上与其所指之间存在映照性相似的现象。翻译的象似性则是指目标语在音、形、句法功能及篇章层次上与源语之间存在映照性相似的现象。英语委婉语是一种很常见的语言现象，也是一种认知现象，从顺序象似性、数量象似性、距离象似性3个方面来探究英语委婉语的汉译，必将促进人们对于英语委婉语的认知研究和翻译研究。%The view that language is arbitrary has been deeply rooted in the linguistics field since the 20 th century. However, language is not absolutely arbitrary because there is a lot of iconicity existing in lan-guage. Language iconicity refers to the phenomenon in which language symbols share a lot of similarity with what they represent in the aspects of phone, graph and structure. Translation iconicity refers to the phenomenon in which the target language shares a lot of similarity with the source language in the aspects of phone, graph, syntactic structure and text. English euphemism is a kind of linguistic as well as cogni-tive phenomenon. Research on the translation of English euphemism from the perspectives of sequencing iconicity, quantitative iconicity, and distance iconicity, can promote people’ s understanding of English euphemism in the fields of cognitive and translation research.
