Map of endemic areas with high arsenic levels in natural water sources around the globe (Arriaza et al. ), with regions indicated on the red-scale frequently having significant public health issues associated with exposure. The regions denoted in green boxes have evidence of increased tolerance, perhaps owing to long-term exposure, and thus the local populations are fruitful examples in which to study the evolutionary response to arsenic
