Sources of diacylglycerols (DAG) in the cell. Intracellularly, DAG is produced as an intermediate during de novo biosynthesis of triacylglycerol (TAG) and phospholipid (PL), and during catabolism of TAG stored in either cytoplasmic and endoplasmic reticulum-associated lipid droplets or PL in the plasma membrane and Golgi complex. Generated DAG locally recruits and promotes activation of conventional and novel protein kinases C (PKCs) and protein kinases D (PKDs). For detailed description see the text.
