The analysis of fabrics as forensic evidence can be crucial to solving crimes. While the fabrics found in crime scenes are usually small-at times, much smaller than a penny-the information they reveal can be critical and may even help determine the innocence or guilt of a suspect. In analyzing samples related to kidnappings, homicides, cold cases, and death row reviews, Christopher Palenik, vice-president and senior research microscopist at materials microanalysis laboratory, Microtrace, and his team have found that fabric analyses typically fall into one of three categories: trace evidence generated by fabrics; the analysis of fabric characteristics and components; and the analysis of alterations to fabrics.
