Lessne was pursuing a business degree at the University of Rhode Island (URI) when, two years into her degree, she decided to switch to textiles with a business minor. She wanted a career in textile fashion, but wasn't clear on a direction until she took a textile science class with (URI professor and former-AATCC president) Martin Bide. According to Linda Welters, chair of the Department of Textiles, Fashion Merchandising and Design at URI, that's when "everything fell into place" for Rachel. A lecture on sustainability in textiles, coupled with previous coursework in environmental geology and the legal and ethical environment of business focused Rachel toward the textile field she wanted to pursue.
