The first 80% indicates, in a general, non-scientific way, how DuPont used its resources in efforts to remove synthetic dye shortages for the textile and paper industries in the United States. The shortages were particularly severe during World Wars I and II. However, by the 1950s, when the book authors entered the dyes business and when synthetic fiber developments were well underway, DuPont had 640 dyes in the US dyeing and finishing business and new dyeing machinery developments.
