Determination of Antimicrobial Efficacy for Textile Products Against Odor-Causing Bacteria

Offensive odors in sports apparel, resulting from the bacterial metabolism of sweat, are often controlled by applying antimicrobial treatments to textiles, fibers, and fabrics. A qualitative test method, such as AATCC Test Method 100, is commonly used to assess the effectiveness of antimicrobial treatments against Gram-positive and Gram-negative strains. Typically, these strains represent organisms associated with nosocomial infection (e.g., Staphylococcus aureus), rather than the odor-causing aerobic Corynebacterium or Bacillus species. This paper evaluates the effectiveness of several antimicrobial-treated textiles against test organisms associated with odor, as well as test organisms specified in AATCC Test Method 100. Recommendations are made for inclusion of selected species when assessing textile antimicrobial activity in sportswear materials, when the primary purpose is to reduce odor build-up.
