"Textiles are widely used in non-clothing applications. Textile failures in many of these applications, such as parachutes, mooring ropes, abseiling ropes, and architectural structures, may lead to commercial losses, injury, and loss of life," notes Mike Pailthorpe, senior consultant for the food & textiles group of the Sydney, Australia, office of AgResearch Ltd. There was even one civil liability case where a seemingly innocuous product defect caused loss of life: a fitted mattress cover for a baby crib shrank excessively, slipped off the mattress, and strangled the baby in his crib. Most commonly, textile testing and analysis focuses on quality assurance and preventing production errors, but Max M. Houck, director of the Forensic Science Initiative and research office manager for Forensic Research and Business Development at the College of Business and Economics at West Virginia University thinks that "Using forensic methods to source production errors also has potential, in that the QA [quality assurance] analyst is doing a similar type of task: investigating the source of some evidence of a fault in manufacturing."
