Many companies would probably not follow the cash-flow policy adopted by Robert Sandelands, the CEO of Whippany, N.J.-based Accordant, a construction software reseller. "If you ask any one of my vendors, they get paid way before I get paid," he says. "1 don't think I have a bill over seven-days old." In a market in which bills are often more than 30 days, 60 days or 90 days outstanding, that is, well, outstanding in terms of the commitment to treat suppliers fairly. And it's a philosophy that Sandelands brings to all parts of his business. If there is one underlying personality trait, it's a work ethic and a commitment to doing the right thing for people, your customers, your employees, your subcontractors," says Sandelands. "It's leaving retained earnings in your company and not being greedy and having the right cash flows. It's treating people like everybody is an owner."
