Six years after publishing the 2nd edition and thirteen after the 1st, Ross Harvey, this time in partnership with Jaye Weatherburn, has produced the 3rd edition of Preserving Digital Materials and anyone working with digital materials should welcome it most gladly. As the authors state very clearly, this is not a how-to manual, but it is an excellent conceptual engagement with digital preservation which is just as crucial to the successful practice of digital preservation as a how-to manual would be. This is an impressively comprehensive look at the field: both in the breadth of its scope, from the items to the requirements to the strategies and beyond, and in the depth to which it dives in each of them, identifying and sharing the latest developments in each of the aspects of digital preservation which it touches. Throughout the work, it does not shy from the debates taking place in the field, such as the potential of a digital dark age and the questions surrounding migration-versus-emulation. And while the authors in some cases display a preference for one side of these debates over another, throughout they treat both sides fairly and offer the reader both the arguments and the context. Even to the seasoned practitioner of digital preservation, it is an engaging and informative read.
