When we teach library instruction sessions, visual literacy is an often-overlooked component. As librarians, we can be preoccupied with the evaluation of text in printed and web-based contexts. As visual resources are increasingly used in scholarly projects, however, it is essential that those in instructional roles become literate themselves in the visual medium and be capable of guiding students to make appropriate decisions about how to use images in their work.
