This issue's ERM Ideas and Innovations column is from Kelly Shipp, Electronic Resources Librarian, University of Maryland Baltimore County. Kelly's premise, based on an article by Gustanfson-Sundel (2011), is that by exploring local thinking and workflow needs, a comprehensive electronic resource management (ERM) schema for implementing a customized ERM process to meet those local practices is essential. Any system used for ERM should be adapted to local ERM processes, rather than the opposite. Kelly would like to shift the importance of workflow goals toward the long-term needs of the local ERM system and away from the limitations of current software. In order to successfully manage this shift, a comprehensive understanding of the local ERM workflow processes is required. Once this is accomplished, Kelly believes that implementation of ERM systems will be more functional in the long term.
