On July 20,1969 the free world watched in amazement as two NASA astronauts, Neil Armstrong and Buzz Aldrin, walked on the surface of the moon. Among them were a 42-year-old Princeton physics professor named Gerard K. O'Neill and his freshman physics students. Inspired by the Apollo landings, O'Neill started giving his students homework problems relating to traveling to and living in space. For their final paper O'Neill asked the class to write about the feasibility of a human habitat in space, and to calculate the requirements of the mass, energy, and propulsion that would be necessary for a viable permanent settlement. The students responded with enthusiasm, and their work prompted Professor O'Neill to personally take up the study of space settlement in earnest.
