On space leadership, he acknowledges the goal of returning to the Moon, but reminds us that we knew how to do this 70 years ago (when he was but 21). His advice to Vice President Pence, formerly governor of Rubin's home state of Indiana and now chair of the National Space Council, is this: "We don't know how much we'll be able to do [out there]. We should do lots of different [things]." Rubin exhorts us to think in the long term, beyond single missions, and create "convoys" of space resources. Yes, the first convoy may take years to arrive, but then they will keep coming. Rubin believes that is the way to open up the solar system, and eventually the stars. "You see what happens when you start using logic?" he asks, pushing his large glasses up to his lively eyes.
