Following decades of entertaining fiction, Space Settlement be-came a topic for serious public and scientific discussion when Princeton Professor Gerard K. O'Neill began researching and publishing on the idea in the early 1970s. Upon hearing a presentations NASA (ioddard Space Fight Center by Or. Peter Glaser on his concept of the solar power satellite (SPS) in 1974, O'Neill first realized the potential connection between Glaser's invention and Space Settlement. He envisioned economically justifying early settlements and settlers based on the key role they could play in the extraction of materials from near Earth objects and use of those materials to deliver cheap, clean space solar power to Earth through SPS.
