摘要

Welcome to this special issue on biologically inspired robotics. This short introduction presents the motivation for this special issue and introduces the six papers that were chosen through the review process. rnBiology has always provided an inspiration for robotics (Holland, 2003; Walter, 1953) although it is only in more recent years that the area has drawn renewed interest (Arkin, 1998; Bekey, 1996, 2005). A full volume of the Philosophical Transactions of the Royal Society containing 16 articles was produced in 2003 documenting the state of the research area after a workshop dedicated to W. Grey Walter (Damper, 2003). The reality of creatures that can adapt and learn in unstructured environments has proved to be an irresistible draw for many researchers. Real animals and insects tackle problems and complete challenges we would love to see our artificial creatures achieve.
