Precise control of liquid inside compartments is critically important in bioreactors, combinatorial analysis, and tissue engineering. A contact angle hysteresis (CAH)-based strategy is demonstrated to construct a semi-egg-like hydrogel architecture, leading to spatial heterogeneous compartmentalization of cells.
