By combining techniques from polymer and metal coordination chemistry, metallo-supramolecular self-assembly can be used to produce polymers exhibiting a variety of properties (e.g., optical, electrochemical, electrochromic, magnetic). Using ter-pyridine-based ligands with transi- tion and/or lanthanide metal ions, various homopolymers and block copolymers have been synthesized and characterized in the last decade. The progress of this field is reviewed by U. S. Schubert and co-workers of the Dutch Polymer Institute in Eindhoven, Netherlands and Friedrich-Schiller-Universitat in Jena, Germany. In addition to an overview of synthetic and characterization techniques for main chain linear homopolymers and block copolymers, they present current concerns and demonstrate how the polymers may be tuned to have specific properties by changing the metal ions or the polymer backbone.
