Staining and Etching: A Simple Method to Fabricate Inorganic Nanostructures from Tissue Slices

Metallic nanostructures have unique properties compared with both macroscopic bulk materials and individual atoms or molecules, including enhanced mechanical, optical, plasmonic, magnetic, and catalytic properties.[1] The fabrication of the two- and three-dimensional metallic nanostructures often relies on the expensive specialized nanofabrication facilities, such as e-beam or focused ion beam lithography, which have limited throughput and are not suitable for large-scale nanomanufacturing.[2]Here, we demonstrated a novel staining-and-etching process for the fabrication of two-dimensional arrays and three-dimensional foam-like metallic nanostructures in large scale from a piece of tendon using a combination of metal staining and oxygen plasma etching.
