Microfluidic systems have played a major role in the development of high-throughput cell screening, biological analysis, cell-based biosensors, and tissue engineering because they offer miniaturized systems with reduced use of reagents, short reaction times, increased speed of analysis, potential for parallel operation, and precise control/monitoring of cellular behavior.
