摘要

The understanding of the flapping-wing mode of flight employed by flying animals including birds, bats and insects is sought by both biologists and engineers. For biologists, the understanding of the associated aerodynamics and the unique flight characteristics of a given flying animal can explain why it is a successful or unsuccessful solution in its local niche, given evolutionary design constraints that have been imposed from various selective pressures. With inspiration from nature and a growing understanding of flapping-wing aerodynamics, engineers are actively transferring the benefits of this flight mode to robotics to develop flapping-wing Micro Air Vehicles (MAVs) for uses such as search and rescue, remote inspection in hazardous environments and reconnaissance.
