NATO has begun to explore the whole topic of aircrew mission training via distributed simulation. The initial SAS-013 study has examined the training need and also identified some of the technical and training challenges involved in developing and implementing advanced distributed simulation for aircrew mission training. The study has concluded that Mission Training via Distributed Simula- tion (MTDS) offers great potential to enhance NATO's operational effectiveness in Composite Air Operations (COMAOs) and other classes of operation. A number of NATO nations have started down the road towards MTDS, by conducting research and demonstrations and by acquiring synthetic training environments which will be the core components of MTDS.
