摘要

Aerospace, defence and space companies around the world are mobilising to assist in producing vital medical and protective equipment needed in the battle against the COVID-19 pandemic. In the UK, an industry consortium led by Meggitt and including GKN, Airbus, Thales and Renishaw has been working as part of the UK Ventilator Challenge to scale up mass production of much needed medical ventilators, with the first model receiving approval on 15 April. Other firms to join fhe UK ventilator effort include Cobham and Babcock. In parallel, a global shortage of personal protective equipment (PPE) for front-line health workers has also seen aerospace firms divert resources into producing protective masks, visors and clothing - with GE partnering with Ford and 3M in the US to produce ventilators and PPE. Both Airbus and Boeing have utilised their 3D printing capabilities to quickly manufacture much needed face visors. Both companies have also assigned company aircraft such as a A350-1000 prototype and the 747 Dreamlifter cargo aircraft to help deliver vital medical supplies. Space companies have also joined the fight, with the UK's Reaction Engines 3D-printing face visors and Skyrora developing a way of rapidly disinfecting protective equipment. In the US, Blue Origin and ULA are now producing face visors, while SpaceX is building face shields and donating hand sanitisers. Virgin Orbit is developing a prototype ventilator for hospitals with the aim of building 100 a week, (see Hope gets wings, p14)
