I am looking forward to my year as President of the Society with great anticipation, as I will be representing an institution that has led the worldwide professional community in aerospace and provided an independent source of knowledge, for over 150 years. I must also confess that it is somewhat daunting to be taking on an office that has been held by some of the great names in aeronautics from industry, the armed services and academia. I would like to thank Simon Henley for the work that he has done in his busy presidential year, and also to thank Stephen Dalton for his service to the Society during the three years of his presidential cycle.2019 provides many notable aerospace-related anniversaries: the centenary of Alcock and Brown's first non-stop transatlantic flight and the 50th anniversary of the first Moon landings, both of which are the subject of events at Hamilton Place in June. I attended the Concorde 50th dinner at the excellent Aerospace Bristol museum to commemorate the first flight of Concorde from Filton; several of the speakers noted what an inspiration Concorde was, and continues to be, for the many schoolchildren and other visitors to the museum. However, as well as celebrating the outstanding achievements of the past, we must ensure that further inspiration is provided for current and future generations via the development of novel projects and concepts across all aspects of aerospace.
