The year 2019 - with its associated centenary and fiftieth anniversary celebrations of major aviation and aerospace milestone events that occurred during 1919 and 1969 - has resulted in the extensive archives of the National Aerospace Library being drawn upon in support of new documentary films, books, commemorative coins and stamps among other projects.In 1919 there occurred spectacular events which focused attention on the peace-time possibilities of the aeroplane. After WW1, aircraft manufacturers, hit hard by the almost complete cessation of demand for new aircraft, searched for new markets for their wares. Only the companies which could demonstrate reliable and commercially viable aircraft would survive. Engine reliability was the major problem that plagued the early flyers. However, the Great War acted as a major stimulus to aircraft technology and aviation witnessed major aeronautical developments.
