Mention the word 'seaplanes' and many people think back to the long-gone days of the 1930s when companies such as Imperial Airways flew passengers around the world in luxury flying boats. However, recent years have seen renewed interest in the use of seaplanes for a variety of applications, including recreational flying, tourist sightseeing flights, private and commercial transport, air-sea rescue, firefighting and providing vital transport links to remote communities. There have also been initiatives to use seaplanes for military operations and even a proposal for transatlantic commercial flights.
