A head of the November 2016 Presidential Election the consensus view was that a Donald Trump victory would be good for US defence contractors, while a Hillary Clinton win might do little more than lead to the continuation of the status quo. During the height of the Cold War, defence spending in the US peaked at 10% of GDP but, apart from one small surge in the early part of this decade, it has declined to between 3% and 5% of GDP. It has fallen further since 2010 and, when US budget sequestration came into effect four years ago, defence spending is estimated to have declined by around 15%. Putting this another way it means that, while spending on defence national security had accounted for 20.1% of the Federal budget in 2010, by 2015 this had declined to less than 16%, while defence as a percentage of GDP had fallen to 3.3%.
