Just over 50 years ago, in a classic piece of inter-service rivalry, with Treasury connivance the RAF out-manoeuvred the navy to show that bombers were better placed to deliver long-range strike than carrier-based aircraft - the result, no new carriers and a principled resignation by a Labour defence minister. The RAF confidently looked forward to deploying its spanking new fleet of F-111 s 'East of Suez', as well as in a NATO role.
