The Airports Commission, led by Sir Howard Davies, has published its interim report on the future expansion of UK airports, saying that one additional runway is needed by 2030. Among the short-listed options suggested by the report is the building of a third 3,500m runway at Heathrow, lengthening an existing Heathrow runway to 6,000m and a new 3,000m runway at Gatwick.
