The grass is sometimes greener on the other side of the fence. Without wishing to wallow in reminiscences of past factory visits, a recent visit to Toulouse paradoxically called to mind some basic truths about the British approach to aerospace industrial planning. My first visit was in the late 1970s, when I was shown the A300 line by the late Felix Kracht, the architect of the Airbus production system. There wasn't much there and certainly not as impressive as a visit to Seattle a few years later. Fast forward to 2010 and a sight of the A380 assembly hall, and knowing that this was backed up by two other facilities, with a total monthly output in double figures and it is easy to appreciate how well European aerospace has moved on.
