So what is the future for BWB airliners? From the efficiency viewpoint the combination of low-fuel burn and large internal volume is highly attractive. But the non-traditional fuselage shape could mean extra structural weight to cope with pressurisation -negating any efficiency advantages. Physiological and psychological issues (like passengers being sat far away from the centreline), too, may have to be investigated, leading some to believe that the BWB will only be used as a highly efficient giant cargo aircraft.
