I read Richard Gardner's article Towards tomorrow's cockpit (AI, September 2010) with both interest and, when I read that 'Tomorrow's cockpit will be safer, simpler, easier to train for...' a feeling that we've been here before. When the 'glass cockpit' arrived it allowed flight, navigation and systems information to be displayed in quite different ways to the traditional instrumentation we were all used to, but much was changed, as suggested in the article, 'because it could be', not because it would be any better. Arguably, the new flight instrument displays are inferior, lacking intuitive rate information, for example, and confusing flight path vector with attitude information.
