In conclusion then, this is an exciting time for military aviation. Though defence budgets are still under intense pressure the first flight of the X-47B, along with other UCAVs in the next few years such as Taranis and nEUROn show unmanned roles evolving fast into faster, more lethal weapons. Indeed, under the US Navy's Naval Aviation Vision it expects to field naval UCAVs by around 2025. Is this a revolution? Tim Beard thinks so: "It's as revolutionary and transformational as the Tomahawk (cruise missile) and the sea leg of the nuclear triad, the Trident submarine."
