Think of Canadian aerospace and most industry observers will immediately recall some of the biggest names in the global sector but located on the western edge of the prairies against a backdrop of the Rocky Mountain peaks, is a lesser-known cluster of organisations that is also determined to exploit its innovative technological assets, specialist skills and a highly motivated ethos. Few outside Canada realise that Alberta has the second largest known oil reserves in the world (Saudi Arabia is No 1) and its thriving, politically secure, oil and gas sector is one reason why the province has the nation's highest growth rate at 4.7% and an investment rate, per capita, that is twice the national average. Alberta's aerospace cluster has some of the highest qualified skilled workers in the world, backed by research and development facilities and academic partnerships that cover the full spectrum of sector activity. During late-March, Aerospace International paid a visit to some key locations to gain an insight into how Alberta's aerospace community is facing the future.
