UK company Raytheon Systems Limited (RSL) has developed an Automatic Dependent Surveillance-Broadcast (ADS-B) system that, it claims, promises a major breakthrough in the amount and accuracy of traffic that can be handled by this system. With air traffic now bouncing back strongly after the past dip caused by 9/11, SARS and Iraq, attention is once again turning to how to cope with the instatiable demand for travel. More flights mean more aircraft in the air, and with many air traffic control systems working at or near capacity, a number of solutions have been presented as a way of keeping up with this headlong growth. By 2015 it is expected there will be a doubling of traffic in European skies driven by the growth of low-cost carriers and increased overflights to and from China.
