In just about a year's time if all goes to plan, the first production Lockheed Martin F-35A Joint Strike Fighter will thunder down a runway, heralding the start of the full flight test effort for the huge international JSF fighter programme which could see over 5,000 examples produced over its lifetime. Judging by the speed at which UCAVs are developing, it could also end up being the last major Western manned fighter. As significant as this first flight will be, it will also kick-off a fierce sales competition between the two teams working on the JSF's advanced powerplants — one the F135, led by P&W, the other (the F136) with GE and Rolls-Royce (with R-R also straddling both teams through its Lift System for the STOVL variant.) With the GE/R-R F136 Fighter Engine Team (FET) only two development years behind the lead F135 engine of P&W, the battle to divvy up the potential thousands of sales is set to become the biggest military engine marketing contest ever seen.
