While China is doing everything it can to be seen by African leaders as having been the most proactive in supplying them with anti- Covid-19 masks and other protective material (Africa Intelligence, 01/04/20) - with the tacit implication that the West is providing little such aid - discrimination against Africans in southern China almost ruined everything. The Africa director of the Chinese Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Beijing, Dai Bing, has spared no effort to mitigate the deep crisis of confidence between Africa and his country that emerged in the midst of the pandemic. Discrimination against African communities in the Guangzhou region of the southern Guangdong province increased in March and April, threatening to create major diplomatic incidents with some capitals. Such widespread criticism has led Chinese ambassadors to be summoned by African governments in several countries, such as Ghana and Kenya. The envoy posted to Addis Ababa, Liu Yuxi, was asked to explain himself in April before Mohamed Lebbat, the adviser to African Union Commission Chairman Moussa Faki. In an effort to respond to the crisis, Deputy Foreign Minister Chen Xiaodong and Dai Bing held a meeting in Beijing on 13 April with 21 African ambassadors. Not all of them were able to attend because of social distancing rules but the gathering appears to have begun to bear fruit.
