After a probe that lasted two years, Australia's federal police force has informed the Woodside oil group that it had found no evidence that individuals or entities linked to the group had paid bribes to Mauritanian officials. In May, 2006, the Green party senator from Tasmania, Christine Milne, asked the police to investigate allegations against Woodside by the Mauritanian government. Formed following a bloodless putsch in the summer of 2005, the regime of president Ely Ould Mohamed Vall accused Woodside of offering financial incentives and equipment to the previous government's oil minister, Zeindane Ould Hmeida. In return, the latter submitted a bill to parliament -which Mauritanian legislators approved on Feb. 1,2005 - that radically changed the production sharing agreement with Woodside on the Chinguetti field, the Australian firm's prime asset in Mauritania at the time.
