Being asked to write about the history of the Stearman aircraft and how it pertains to the aerial application industry is a daunting task since the aircraft has been written about a lot, especially in Wichita, Kansas, which is known as "the Air Capital of the World." Daunting because Stearmans must be mentioned in the same vein as Cessna and Beech, especially if the writer is a Wichita native. With that disclaimer, here is a "very" brief history of the Stearman aircraft. Commercial airplane manufacturing began to take root in Wichita in 1919 when Jake Moellendick, an oilman, financially backed Matty Laird and his brother Charles as they developed the E.M. Laird Airplane Company and the Swallow aircraft. One of their first hires was a young engineer/pilot by the name of Lloyd Stearman. Another young pilot and salesman hired next was Walter Beech. George "Buck" Weaver, a boyhood friend of Matty's, also came west with the group. Weaver later gained fame in his own right with Weaver Aircraft Co., better known to all of us as Waco Aircraft.
