I have always ielt that a formal course in continuum mechanics should be required in engineering and science undergraduate curricula. Traditionally, the subject is taught at the graduate level, for which many excellent books are available, both classics and modern:, e.g., [1-4]. Most of these texts are rich with mathematical rigor and elegance that can be appreciated by advanced students in traditional engineering disciplines. The present text, a simplified version of the author's previous book [3], is specifically intended for undergraduates in all science and engineering disciplines. The text provides an easy presentation of the subjects of fluid mechanics, solid mechanics, and heat transfer in a unified form based upon the conservation principles. In doing so, it introduces the basic laws of physics, as applied to engineering systems, in a fashion that can be understood by an undergraduate student without a prior knowledqe of mechanics.
