Sales of HVAC equipment ticked upward in 2016, according to Air-Conditioning, Heating, and Refrigeration Institute (AHRI), which reported that 2016 year-to-date combined U.S. shipments of central air conditioners and air-source heat pumps increased 7.6 percent over 2015 and shipments of gas warm-air furnaces increased 4.6 percent for the same time period. These figures come on the heels of some sobering news from the Bureau of Economic Analysis, which reported that the real gross domestic product (GDP) of the U.S. increased at an annual rate of just 1.9 percent in the fourth quarter of 2016. For the year, real GDP expanded by only 1.6 percent, which is the slowest pace of growth since 2011, and that lackluster trend may continue, according to the Congressional Budget Office (CBO), which projects that GDP will expand at an average annual pace of just 2.1 percent over the next two years.
