Now known as NAS JRB Fort Worth, Texas (the airfield itself is still called Car-swell), Carswell AFB dates its posl-Worid War I history back to 1940 when the city of Fort Worth petitioned several aircraft manufacturers to build a facility there. Consolidated Aircraft accepted the city's request, then approached the Air Corps with the suggestion that they build a joint airfield adjacent to their new plant, where they planned to manufacture a four-engined bomber that would become known as the B-24 Liberator.
