The U.S. Air Force celebrates its birth date as Aug. 1, 1907, when the Aeronautical Division of the Army Signal Corps was established. The first chief was Capt. Charles De-Forest Chandler, a balloon pilot. There were no airplane pilots in the Army at that point. In fact, the Army did not even have any airplanes yet-and would not get its first one for another two years Its small air fleet consisted entirely of lighter-than-air balloons.
