On November 13, 2015, the French capital was shaken by the worst terrorist attacks in the nation's history. During the evening and night, French President Francois Hollande made two live television appearances. In his first address to the French people from the Elysee Palace, he said he knew who was responsible for the actions. A short while later, he talked to journalists outside the Bataclan theatre where intervention teams had just ended the terrorist attack and hostage situation, which cost the lives of 89 people. In his second address, Hollande's tone had changed and he stated that France would fight back and the response would be ruthless. An escalation in French air strikes on IS in Syria was unavoidable.
