Three BAE 146s and two Avro RJ85s operated by Cobham Aviation Services for fly-in fly-out (FIFO) air services in Australia are now dedicated to unpaved operations. Cobham is the only aviation service provider in the country operating jet aircraft to gravel runways, and it is using the jets to transport workers to mines in Western Australia. A restriction limiting payload/ range performance from unpaved runways for BAE 146s/Avro RJs was lifted by the European Aviation Safety Agency (EASA) in January 2015. That means the aircraft are permitted to carry four tonnes more cargo payload (or up 40 passengers) or fly an additional 700nm (1,400km) range, or a mix of the two. The aircraft have a gravel protection kit developed by BAE Systems Regional Aircraft and low-pressure tyres.
