Russian Naval Aviation has resumed using the Soviet-era land-based Naval Aviation Testing and Training Complex at Saki in the Crimea, according to an announcement made on April 25. A detachment of Su-33 Hanker fighters and Su-25UTG Frogfoot trainers deployed from the 279th Separate Naval Fighter Regiment of the Northern Fleet to use the facility's simulated carrier deck and ski-jump for training. Since the occupation of the Crimea, Russian Naval Aviation aircraft have operated from Saki in 2014 and 2015 to assess its suitability for carrier training.
