The dominant trend in the commercial aircraft industry is the introduction of a new generation of airliners, both clean-sheet designs and revised older ones, designed to cut fuel burn, emissions and operational costs (see feature, this issue). Brazil's Embraer is part of the trend. It is revamping its E175, E190 and E195 regional jets with new engines and technologies to create its E-Jets E2 range. On May 23, the first prototype E190-E2, PR-ZEY (c 19020001) flew from Embraer's Sao Jose dos Campos facility, near Sao Paulo, on its maiden test flight.
