The UK Maritime and Coastguard Agency (MCA) has recently Mailed the BAE Jetstream 41 to support search and rescue (SAR) around the British coast. An aircraft was provided to Bristow Helicopters, the operator of the MCA's aircraft, by Eastern Airways along with a crew. The J41 was controlled through the Aeronautical Rescue Coordination Centre and supported the MCA's helicopters off the southern and eastern coasts of the UK. The trial assessed whether a fixed-wing aircraft could provide additional support for SAR helicopters by identifying people, boats or ships in distress. The MCA said that if the trial is successful, options for permanent provision will be explored, possibly in combination with similar requirements elsewhere in the UK Government.
