The UK Airports Commission has recommended a third runway is built at London Heathrow. The commission ruled out other options to extend the existing two runways or build a second runway at Gatwick. A proposal to build a new London hub on reclaimed land in the Thames Estuary, supported by London Mayor Boris Johnson, was discounted by the commission last year on cost grounds.
