The history of the Chengdu J-10 Meng Long or Vigorous Dragon started with the search for a successor to the J-7 (a licence built version of the MiG-21) series in 1981. Chengdu Aircraft Corporation's (CAC) proposal was chosen in 1984. Once final requirements were formalised in early 1986 a long and protracted development phase began, but - with uncertainty about overseas assistance. Consultations with Israel Aircraft Industries took place and CAC adopted the Russian NPO Saturn AL-31 FN-engine. The J-7's successor was designated the J-10, the first prototype was completed in May 1997 and the maiden flight took place on March 23, 1998.
